Prototype common sense to know when making prototypes

release time:2020-10-26    Article release: this site【return】

In layman's terms, the prototype is one or several first made according to the appearance drawings or structural drawings of the product without opening the mold, and used to check the rationality of the appearance or structure. The early prototypes were restricted by various conditions, mainly in that most of their work was done by hand, which made it difficult to strictly meet the size requirements of appearance and structural drawings due to the long construction period of the prototypes. Therefore, they checked the appearance or The function of structural rationality is also greatly reduced. With the advancement of science and technology, the rapid development of CAD and CAM technology has provided better technical support for prototype manufacturing, making the accuracy of the prototype possible. On the other hand, with the increasingly fierce social competition, the speed of product development has increasingly become the main contradiction of competition, and prototype manufacturing can effectively increase the speed of product development. It is under this situation that the prototype manufacturing industry has emerged as a relatively independent industry and has flourished.

Prototypes can be divided into manual and numerical control prototypes according to the production methods:

(1) Manual prototype: The main workload is done by hand.

(2) Numerical Control Prototyping: The main workload is completed by CNC machine tools, and depending on the equipment used, it can be divided into laser rapid prototyping (RP, Rapid Prototyping) prototypes and machining center (CNC) prototypes.

A: RP prototype: mainly produced by laser rapid prototyping technology.

B: CNC prototypes: mainly prototypes produced by machining centers.

RP prototypes have their own advantages compared with CNC prototypes:

The advantages of RP prototypes are mainly manifested in its rapidity, but it is mainly formed by accumulation technology, so RP prototypes are generally relatively rough, and there are certain requirements for the wall thickness of the product, for example, the wall thickness is too thin to be produced.

The advantage of CNC prototype is that it can accurately reflect the information expressed in the drawings, and the surface quality of CNC prototype is high, especially after the surface spraying and silk printing are completed, it is even more brilliant than the product produced after the mold is opened. Therefore, CNC prototype manufacturing has increasingly become the mainstream of prototype manufacturing.

According to the materials used in production, the prototype can be divided into plastic and metal prototypes:

(1) Plastic prototype: The raw material is plastic, mainly the prototype of some plastic products, such as televisions, monitors, telephones, etc.

(2) Metal prototypes: the raw materials are aluminum-magnesium alloys and other metal materials, mainly for high-end products, such as notebook computers, high-end single players, MP3 players, CD players, and so on.

The necessity of making prototypes

(1) Inspection of appearance design

The prototype is not only visible, but also touchable. It can directly reflect the designer's creativity in the form of physical objects, avoiding the disadvantage of "drawing to look good but not making it look good". Therefore, prototype production is indispensable in the process of new product development and product shape deliberation.

(2) Inspection structure design

Because the prototype is assembleable, it can intuitively reflect the rationality of the structure and the ease of installation. It is convenient to find and solve problems early.

(3) Avoid the risk of opening the mold directly

Because the cost of mold manufacturing is generally very high, relatively large molds are worth hundreds of thousands or even millions. If unreasonable structure or other problems are found in the process of mold opening, the loss can be imagined. Prototype production can avoid this loss and reduce the risk of mold opening.

(4) Make the product launch time much earlier

Because of the advanced nature of prototype production, you can use the prototype for product promotion before the mold is developed, and even the early sales and production preparations to occupy the market as soon as possible.

If you want to do industrial design, you should find a design company or a copy number company. If you do prototypes, you should find a prototype factory.
